Jeanne Rosier Smith has painted full time for twenty years, after earning a PhD in English and teaching American literature. “The longer I study the landscape, the more I cherish what each season reveals. In the studio I draw on plein air time and sensory memory: mist in the lungs, wind in grasses, the crunch of snow, the heat of sun and wet sand. At the easel I focus on light, color, texture, and rhythm. Simply noticing what is before us rewards us with awe and wonder. Finding beauty can lift the spirit,” says Jeanne.
Her solo show celebrates New England landscapes and seascapes across the year: brilliant light on snow, spring apple blossoms, the hush of a summer meadow, pounding surf, and autumn mist. Thirty new pastels invite the viewer in with fresh, unexpected expressions of mood and atmosphere. This is Jeanne’s first solo exhibition at the gallery. She is a Master Pastelist with the Pastel Society of America, a Copley Society Master Artist, and an Eminent Pastelist with the International Association of Pastel. She is also a signature member of the American Society of Marine Artists and the American Impressionist Society. She has given talks and demonstrations at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Her work has received top national awards, has been featured in leading art magazines, and is collected worldwide.
