November 18, 2024 – February 7, 2025
Opening Reception on Thursday, November 21, 4:00-6:00pm at Pegasus Gallery.
Kat Owens creates life-size portraits of animal species impacted by plastics discarded by humans. Each work is composed of consumer waste and recycling stream packaging that are manipulated into visually striking compositions. The basis of her process includes mosaic, quilt, and collage traditions but encompasses a larger artistic practice of observation, research, community engagement, and environmental education.
The power of Owens’ artwork resides in the pattern rich arrangements of graphic text fonts, inherent material surface contrasts, and bold color interactions. The overall visual effects these packaging combinations offer are further heightened by juxtapositions of their recognizable product components and the life-like animal portraits they contain. In spite of the visual pleasure Owens’ arrangements of everyday plastic materials offer, the species represented in each project is poignantly fabricated from the very material pollutants that threaten them.
Kat Owens is an interdisciplinary artist, teacher, and researcher who focuses on the environment. Owens holds a PHD in Governance and Sustainable Development from the University of Twente (the Netherlands). She also holds an MA of Environmental Studies, a BA Biology, a BS Anthropology, and a BA Studio Art from the College of Charleston, South Carolina. She has led community workshops and exhibited her artwork throughout Connecticut, regionally, and internationally. See more of her work at: www.katowens.com

Individual attention will be given to each student at their skill level.
In the third week participants bring photos or objects from home to draw in an effort to improve how they see and, therefore, their drawing skills. Material list available upon registration.

In this class enter the Art of the Abstract using mixed mediums, fluid acrylics, acrylic ink, neocrayons, pencils and permanent markers. This requires some self-examination and exploration to find your visual inspiration to actualize the art and to create a finished work by the end of the 5-week session.
Start with a couple of small 5 x7 mat boards doing fast, fun, instinctual exercises and small expanding scribbles and doodles. Then graduate to a larger substrate and with some guidance go through the steps to complete your abstract work of art.
Supply list available upon registration and instructions for caring for your new supplies to use them again and again.
Regina Thomas’ collage and mixed media art is a mélange of visual stimuli, colors, and shapes involving different genres from the representational to the abstract. Regina has lived and traveled throughout Asia and Europe. While in London, she attended Richmond University concentrating on the Art Disciplines as well as Studio classes. Upon her return to the states she continued refining her art through classes and workshops at RISD (Rhode Island School of Design), The New Art Center in Newton – MA, South Shore Art Center – MA, West Hartford Art League, Creative Arts Workshop/New Haven, CT, Yale University and The British Art Museum.
Regina has been included in many juried exhibitions in New England. Thomas shows in private galleries and has private collectors across the U.S., Europe, South America and Asia. Call for Actors for New Plays Festival
Oddfellows Playhouse will be hosting a New Plays Festival on Saturday, February 15, and actors (teens, college students and adults) are needed.
Five young playwrights have been working with nationally produced playwright Darcy Parker Bruce this winter, developing new work for the stage. Darcy Parker Bruce has an MFA in Playwriting from Smith College, and their plays have been produced across the country as well as in Australia, Germany and Ireland. They have received many awards and fellowships, and several of their plays have been published by Broadway Play Publishing.
The five playwrights are X Hoover, Bella Pramanik and Zaryana Maldonado, all of Middletown; Sawyer Hollant of Portland; and Bayley Sklodosky of East Hampton. At the New Plays Festival we will need approximately 20 actors to take on the roles in these freshly written productions. Each play will be directed by a locally-based professional theater director and performed in a script-in-hand format at 7 pm, followed by a talkback with the writers, directors and cast.
Acting opportunities are available for teens, college students, and adult actors. The New Plays Festival is a one day commitment for performers, and should be a fun and fast-paced day of creativity. There is no cost to participate and dinner will be provided. The Festival is on Saturday, February 15 (snow date February 16). Rehearsals will be held from 1pm to 5 pm. Dinner will be served at 5 pm, and the Public Performance will take place at 7 pm. The event is FREE.
To be a performer in the New Plays Festival, please contact info@oddfellows.org or call (860) 347-6143.

On February 23, Essex Winter Series Jazz Advisor Jeff Barnhart will present his Essex Eight! Hot music of the 1920s and 1930s will be dished up by internationally celebrated jazz musicians who he's also proud to call friends. You'll be amazed at the virtuosity and versatility of: Jeff Barnhart (piano, vocals); Andy Schumm (cornet, clarinet, piano); Dan Levinson (reeds); Billy Novick (reeds); Jim Fryer (trombone, euphonium, vocal); Vince Giordano (string bass, tuba, bass sax, vocal); Arnt Arntzen (banjo/guitar, vocal); Bill Reynolds (drums). While this octet has never appeared anywhere prior to gracing the stage at Old Saybrook High School, you'll marvel at the synergy that makes the group sound as if they've been performing together for decades! Jeff Barnhart's Essex Eight has been carefully curated to bring out the best in each of these world-class musicians. You'll be talking about this concert for years to come.
This toe-tapping, hand-clapping – maybe even up-and-dancing – event will be followed by the award-winning Terra String Quartet on March 9 at Congregation Beth Shalom (Chester) and flutist Tara Helen O’Connor with Eight Emerging Artist Alumni on April 6 at Valley Regional High School (Deep River).
Concerts begin at 3 pm and are general admission. For tickets visit www.essexwinterseries.com or call 860-272-4572. For all our venues, parking, entry and seating accessibility is available.
This year's jazz concert is dedicated to the memory of Sharon D. Clark, generously funded by long-time EWS concert sponsors: Her loving husband, Herb Clark, the Clark Family, and good friends, Jacqueline Hubbard and Norman Needleman. Our 2025 season is sponsored by ASP Trust and this jazz concert is sponsored by the Clark Group and Tower Laboratories.

These multi-layered works portray her view of the world, never realistic, injecting her own narratives, metaphors, and icons. Regina works instinctually, and her desire is to stimulate and intrigue the viewer, make a connection, bringing their own experiences to the work.
Her most recent shows have been at The John Slade Ely House in New Haven, and The Spectrum Gallery in Centerbrook where she also holds classes in collage and mixed media art.

The piano was an ideal instrument for Wadsworth’s role because it could easily embrace any number or variety of the magnificent instrumental friends he’d invite to the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme. But in March, we will bask in the glory of the piano as a solo instrument, with works by Schubert and Bach as golden-circle-spun by pianist Inon Barnatan who stunned and delighted in Season 32.
