Kat Owens creates life-size portraits of animal species impacted by plastics discarded by humans. Each work is composed of consumer waste and recycling stream packaging that are manipulated into visually striking compositions. The basis of her process includes mosaic, quilt, and collage traditions but encompasses a larger artistic practice of observation, research, community engagement, and environmental education.
The power of Owens’ artwork resides in the pattern rich arrangements of graphic text fonts, inherent material surface contrasts, and bold color interactions. The overall visual effects these packaging combinations offer are further heightened by juxtapositions of their recognizable product components and the life-like animal portraits they contain. In spite of the visual pleasure Owens’ arrangements of everyday plastic materials offer, the species represented in each project is poignantly fabricated from the very material pollutants that threaten them.

A Christmas Carol
8 years after Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility, the adventurous Margaret Dashwood returns home to surprise her family for the holidays. The surprise is hers when she finds her former love interest, Lavinia, masquerading as the maid. Soon, jealousy, betrayal, and wild revelations threaten to upturn her plans for a lovely family visit, forcing her to decide if she's willing to embrace her true feelings to save Christmas.

Calling all aspiring artists! Spectrum Art Gallery is excited to announce, “Whimsical Workshops for Children.” Beginning in December, we are hosting workshops for ages five through eight where they’ll create enchanting keepsakes in every class: One to take home that day and one which will go on display in the gallery for the month of December (and brought home afterwards)! This is a terrific opportunity for kids to begin building their creativity with artist-led classes and artwork in an established gallery.
Join us on Saturdays starting in December where children will participate in story time as told by the instructors. They will learn about different art techniques as they observe a variety of crafts in the store. During the workshops they will create two works of art using natural materials gathered in the forests, fields and beaches of New England. Hosted by Samantha Barlow-Beamer, a local artist and former early childhood educator known for whimsical fairy houses displayed in the gallery and at The Florence Griswold Museum’s “Wee Faerie Village” and Holly Matarazzo, a professional musician and early childhood educator. Children will be in capable hands as they ignite their creative thinking, develop dexterity and build a bridge of empathy between the modern world and the splendid nature that surrounds us. Advanced registration is required, or you may visit the gallery to register or call the gallery (860)767-0742.
Along the quiet beaches of New England and wandering through the forest, Samantha Barlow-Beamer grew up closely with nature on her doorstep. It was during a trip to Mohegan Island off the coast of Maine when her creative inspiration for building fairy houses and designing jewelry really took off. Mohegan Island has one rule which five-year-old Samantha never forgot and still follows today: You must only make fairy houses with natural materials which have already fallen to the ground.
The one place she had trouble building fairy houses was in New York City where she lived and worked for ten years as a sales director for a UK based corporate consulting firm and later at a different consulting firm where she developed and launched a software integrated with AI. Trees are hard to come by in New York City, so she packed up her sticks and beads and moved back to the shoreline where she found her husband. Now with their two cats and their toddler, the family travels through New England gathering natural materials for her fairy houses and visiting antique stores searching for beads to repurpose for jewelry. Sometimes her aunts send her shells from tranquil Caribbean beaches and bark from their local forests; all of which get repurposed for her artwork. In addition to her loyal partnership with Spectrum Gallery who discovered her in 2023, Samantha was featured in the 2024 Wee Faerie Village at The Florence Griswold Museum. Her art is designed to remind collectors of the beauty of nature and inspire them to continue to do what they can to preserve our incredible planet and respect our natural ecosystems.
Date: Saturday, December 14: Create a Watercolor and Mosaic Holiday Window & a holiday ornament to go on display in the gallery for the month.

Kat Owens is an interdisciplinary artist, teacher, and researcher who focuses on the environment. Owens holds a PHD in Governance and Sustainable Development from the University of Twente (the Netherlands). She also holds an MA of Environmental Studies, a BA Biology, a BS Anthropology, and a BA Studio Art from the College of Charleston, South Carolina. She has led community workshops and exhibited her artwork throughout Connecticut, regionally, and internationally. See more of her work at: www.katowens.com

"Let There Be Love" Holiday Show
8 years after Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility, the adventurous Margaret Dashwood returns home to surprise her family for the holidays. The surprise is hers when she finds her former love interest, Lavinia, masquerading as the maid. Soon, jealousy, betrayal, and wild revelations threaten to upturn her plans for a lovely family visit, forcing her to decide if she's willing to embrace her true feelings to save Christmas.
Miss Margaret Barton's Cottage Christmas Surprise!🎄

"Let There Be Love" Holiday Show
November 18, 2024 – February 7, 2025
Opening Reception on Thursday, November 21, 4:00-6:00pm at Pegasus Gallery.

The Festival, which will feature staged readings of all the New Plays, is a daylong event in which young actors work with professional directors to bring the new works to life through script-in-hand performances.
To register for either or both of these classes, go to www.oddfellows.org, call (860) 347-6143, or email info@oddfellows.org . Tuition for the Playwriting class is $200, which includes all eight classes plus participation in the New Plays Festival. Tuition for the six-week Actor’s Laboratory is $120. Financial Aid or Work-Study is available for either class, and no one is ever turned away for lack of funds.
Oddfellows Playhouse, founded in 1975, is Connecticut’s oldest and largest theater program for young people. Throughout its history, Oddfellows has remained committed to artistic excellence and social change. The Playhouse’s mission has three parts: 1) an artistic dimension to provide high-quality theater by and for young people; 2) an educational dimension to promote the growth of young people--in skills, knowledge, and self-confidence--through the performing arts; and 3) a social action dimension to offer opportunities especially to underserved and at-risk youngsters to promote the development of a genuinely multiracial, multicultural society.

Kat Owens is an interdisciplinary artist, teacher, and researcher who focuses on the environment. Owens holds a PHD in Governance and Sustainable Development from the University of Twente (the Netherlands). Opening Reception on Thursday, November 21, 4:00-6:00pm at Pegasus Gallery.

The piano was an ideal instrument for Wadsworth’s role because it could easily embrace any number or variety of the magnificent instrumental friends he’d invite to the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme. But in March, we will bask in the glory of the piano as a solo instrument, with works by Schubert and Bach as golden-circle-spun by pianist Inon Barnatan who stunned and delighted in Season 32.

Caleb Hudson will astound us once again in the 34th season finale with his new ensemble, Triple Cortado, playing arrangements of standard repertoire in a miraculous trio of trumpet, trombone and piano. It might sound edgy to arrange Mendelssohn’s perfect Piano Trio in D minor, for example, for such an unlikely ensemble; again, we’re just turning the dial back to an old, common practice of arranging great music for whatever ensemble is at hand.
Artists
Triple Cortado Trio
Caleb Hudson, trumpet
Achilles Liarmakopoulos, trombone
Ahmed Alom, piano
Program Summary
Felix Mendelssohn, Trio 1 in D minor, Op. 49
Johann Strauss, Die Fledermaus Overture
Leonard Bernstein, from West Side Story
Works by:
Pixinguinha
Pablo de Sarasate
and others
