During November 24, 2025– February 4, 2026, the NewAlliance Foundation Art Gallery at CT State Community College, Gateway Campus is pleased to present the work of Hafsa Nouman and Sarah Phyllis Smith in their two-person exhibition “You Will Be the Mirror”.
This exhibition includes luminous abstract paintings by Hafsa Nouman, and delicate narrative photographs from Sarah Phyllis Smith. Nouman’s abstract fields are mirrored in Smith’s conceptual photographs and both artists deconstruct space, context, and interpretation with their unique, thought provoking art practices.
Hafsa’s practice focuses on the deconstruction of colonial hierarchies embedded in patriarchal spaces- both monumental and domestic. Her critical focus is rooted in the relationship between ‘object’ and ‘desire’ which often results in visual excavations of architectural thresholds, such as doors, walls, and wrought iron patterns. Through those thresholds, Nouman creates a spatial logic that brings attention to the painted object’s histories, and material realities in a way that they can be re-embodied in the gallery space.
Sarah’s photography follows another deconstruction through abstraction and manipulation of the images. Though her work is deeply personal, themes of loss, longing, and desire permeate throughout her images, and act as both voyeuristic insight and decontextualization. In this examination of her personal experiences the viewer is invited into her both stark and tender space, where deep and slow processing occurs. When we see figures in her work, they are sometimes performative, and sometimes autobiographical. These two directions bring Sarah’s images into their own world. They come from a realistic documentation, but through her perception we arrive at an open-ended meditative place of self-discovery.
Please join us for a reception on Thursday, December 4, 5:00-7:00pm with light refreshments and food. The NewAlliance Foundation Art Gallery at CT State Community College, Gateway is open Monday -Friday 9:00am-9:00pm.
Artist Talk:11:00am-12:00pm in the Gallery.

Every purchase makes a difference.”
Lyme Artisans Guild President Carol Stanland adds, “Handcrafts are very much about community and making connections with people in a community, making any acquisition more meaningful than it would otherwise be. We at LAG very much enjoy sharing our process as well as our products. Knowledge about process gives our products depth.”

From Frank Pepe’s original hat to celebrity-signed pizza boxes (including Gwyneth Paltrow and Yogi Berra!), if you love the crust, the crunch and the char of New Haven apizza, or simply have strong views on what comprises a good pie, you’ll find something to feed your personal pizza passion in the new exhibit “Pronounced Ah-Beetz,” open now at the New Haven Museum (NHM) through October 2027.
“Pronounced Ah-Beetz” examines the fun, the flavor and the history of pizza, including its origin as an affordable means of feeding workers in the fields of Italy, and how it became the food of the poor in the U.S. The Italian migration to New Haven gave way to Frank Pepe’s Pizzeria Napoletana, which gave birth to Sally’s Apizza, while a mile away Tony’s Apizza became Modern. How these three establishments became among the most iconically loved pizza restaurants in the country is a major focus.
While the exhibit highlights the “Big 3” original apizza spots in New Haven, it also extends through the family tree of New Haven pizzerias to present a picture of family, food and community that includes a host of other local pizzerias, including: Ernie’s, Zuppardi’s, BAR, Zeneli’s, Olde World, and the Big Green Pizza Truck, among others.
“Pronounced Ah-Beetz” Exhibit at New Haven Museum
Exhibition open Wednesday through Sunday from 10am to 4pm with free parking and admission EXCEPT Thursday, November 27 (Thanksgiving); Wednesday, December 24 (Christmas Eve); and Thursday, December 25 (Christmas Day).
Many crèches, the three-dimensional representation of the Nativity scene, feature a diversity of settings and stable designs — the most common of which is an open-front wood structure. However, many artisans model their crèches after buildings and landscapes that are native to their homelands.
This exhibit includes a variety of crèches that showcase different examples of stables and mangers. In addition, it also highlights a handful of works whose settings have been customized for the figures they contain. One of these is the Neapolitan, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, by Cantone and Costabile of Naples, Italy. In addition, a brand-new crèche will be featured in this exhibit: The Nativity at New Haven's St. Mary’s Church, designed by US-based Navidad Nativities, Inc., with figures made in Italy by Original Heide.
Exhibit | Away in a Manger: The Creation of Nativity Scenes
Exhibition open Wednesday through Sunday from 10am to 4pm with free parking and admission EXCEPT Thursday, November 27 (Thanksgiving); Wednesday, December 24 (Christmas Eve); and Thursday, December 25 (Christmas Day).
For centuries people around the world have celebrated the birth of Jesus Christ and numerous traditions have been incorporated into the Christmas season. Advent calendars, Christmas trees, and the display of the crèche, the three-dimensional representation of the Nativity scene, are just a few of these traditions. These traditions also incorporate other important Christian figures and events in Christ’s life, such as St. Nicholas Day and the Feast of the Epiphany.
This Christmas, the Blessed Michael McGivney Pilgrimage Center presents the exhibit, The Spirit of Christmas, which features crèches and other artwork from around the globe celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ and traditions and feast days during the season.
Enjoy the Christmas season at the Blessed Michael McGivney Pilgrimage Center through this exhibit, the supplemental exhibit Away in a Manger and a variety of programs, including our annual Christmastime Family Day. Discover more of our offerings at https://www.michaelmcgivneycenter.org/

NICK FRADIANI will continue in the title role for the second year of the national tour of A BEAUTIFUL NOISE: THE NEIL DIAMOND MUSICAL.
Created in collaboration with Neil Diamond himself, A BEAUTIFUL NOISE: THE NEIL DIAMOND MUSICAL is the uplifting true story of how a kid from Brooklyn became a chart-busting, show-stopping American rock icon. With 120 million albums sold, a catalogue of classics like "America," "Forever in Blue Jeans," and "Sweet Caroline," an induction into the Songwriters and Rock and Roll Halls of Fame, a Grammy® Lifetime Achievement Award, and sold-out concerts around the world that made him bigger than Elvis, Neil Diamond's story was made to shine on Broadway-and head out on the road across America.
Like Jersey Boys and Beautiful: The Carole King Musical before it, A BEAUTIFUL NOISE: THE NEIL DIAMOND MUSICAL is an inspiring, exhilarating, energy-filled musical memoir that tells the untold true story of how America's greatest hitmaker became a star, set to the songs that defined his career.
Presented in association with and endorsed by Neil Diamond.

About the exhibition:
Installed at the Schwarzman Center, “Shining Light on Truth: Black Lives at Yale & in New Haven,” illuminates ongoing research that recovers the essential role of Black people throughout Yale and New Haven history. The exhibition puts back at the center of local storytelling people who have always been central to local history. It celebrates Black community building, resistance, and resilience on campus and in New Haven.
The show includes nearly one hundred images of Yale’s earliest Black students from the 1800s and early 1900s, many of whom had deep New Haven connections. The Schwarzman exhibition features compelling reproductions of photographs of New Haveners who were custodians of Yale. The Luke, Grimes, Creed, Park, and Bassett families, among the many people key to founding and sustaining Yale, and who are heralded in the show.
“Shining Light on Truth: Black Lives at Yale & in New Haven” showcases the proposal, made and thwarted in 1831, to build a Black college in New Haven. It also highlights the successful efforts of Black students in the 1960s to establish the Afro-American Cultural Center and Afro-American Studies at Yale.
This exhibition brings forth knowledge kept alive in archives and memory for many centuries—even when the dominant culture chose to ignore, bury, or forget. It extends the work of the Yale and Slavery Research Project and follows from the exhibition, “Shining Light on Truth: New Haven, Yale and Slavery,” at the New Haven Museum from February 16, 2024 – March 1, 2025.

Join the New Haven Museum (NHM) for “Long Wharf Theatre: A Legacy in Moments,” a celebration of nationally renowned theatre photographer T. Charles Erickson. The event will include a tour of Erickson’s photographs and a conversation with Erickson and theatre journalist Frank Rizzo, moderated by Long Wharf Theatre Artistic Director Jacob G. Padrón and followed by a Q&A, on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at 3 p.m. The free event will be preceded by a tour with Long Wharf Theatre’s Director of Artistic Planning and Exhibition Curator Jessica Durdock Moreno at 2:15 p.m.
The program will open with a reception at 3:00 p.m. in the NHM ballroom. Visitors will meet the artist and celebrate his astonishing body of work. Erickson’s artistry constitutes the majority of the dozens of images in the current NHM exhibition, “Invitation to Engage: 60 Years of Long Wharf Theatre & Beyond,” an immersive and interactive experience celebrating the history, legacy, and future of New Haven’s own world-class theatre company, on view through February 2026.
With his keen eye for composition and lighting, Erickson’s photographs capture the energy, emotion and intricacies of stage performances. He has a talent for freezing moments that convey the essence of a production, from powerful acting moments revealing deep emotional presence to visually stunning set designs and costumes.
Commenting on Erickson’s career, Rizzo notes, “Charlie Erickson’s body of work is simply breathtaking—and he certainly makes my stories come alive. He knows just how to capture the essence of a production, bringing to life one great stage moment after another, moments that otherwise would have just become an increasingly distant memory. But Charlie was there and, through his lens and by his artistry, so are we.” He adds, “Charlie and his work are theatrical treasures.”
Since 1984, Erickson has photographed scores of Long Wharf Theatre productions, capturing singular moments on stage, including iconic performances by: Joanne Woodward in “Arsenic and Old Lace”; Frances McDormand in “All My Sons”; Al Pacino in “Hugie”; Mary Alice in “The Amen Corner”; Kathleen Turner in “Camille”; Martha Plimpton in “Hedda Gabler”; Billy Porter in “Going Native”; the world premiere of Arthur Miller’s “Broken Glass,” and many more.
Noting the relationship between Erickson’s legacy and Long Wharf Theatre’s history, Padrón says, “Through his own virtuosic artistry, Charlie Erickson has captured the extraordinary moments in Long Wharf Theatre’s storied history that have captivated artists and audiences across New Haven, the nation, and beyond. Through his powerful photos, the beauty, courage, innovation, and grit of Long Wharf Theatre’s boundary-breaking productions will continue to inspire us all for generations to come.”
In addition to his extensive contribution to the Long Wharf Theatre archive, Erickson has photographed productions for the Hartford Stage Company, Yale Rep, Princeton’s McCarter Theatre, Boston’s A.R.T. and Huntington Theatres, Classic and Westport Country Playhouse, among others, and numerous independently mounted Broadway and Off-Broadway productions.
The highlight of “Long Wharf Theatre: A Legacy in Moments,” will be a conversation between Erickson, who has called New Haven home since the late 1970s, and Frank Rizzo, a Connecticut resident of over 40 years. Rizzo is an acclaimed theatre journalist whose work can be read in Variety, The New York Times, Connecticut Magazine, The Hartford Courant, Encore magazine, and others—and whose articles have featured Erickson’s photographs throughout the years.
Moderating the conversation will be Long Wharf Theatre Artistic Director Jacob G. Padrón. The conversation will encompass Erickson’s body of work, his approach to capturing stars in their most virtuosic turns on the stage, reflections on his vast archive, and a recognition of the impact his legacy will have on the theatre industry for generations to come. The conversation will conclude with an open forum Q&A with the audience—but not before delighting in Erickson’s behind-the-scenes anecdotes featuring his run-ins with the brightest luminaries of the American theatre.
“Invitation to Engage: 60 Years of Long Wharf Theatre & Beyond” is on view through February 2026. The exhibition features a collection of costumes, posters, and rare archival treasures that bring the vibrant history of Long Wharf Theatre to life, and a “who’s who” of stage royalty, including Rita Moreno, Colman Domingo, Al Pacino, Frances McDormand, Anna Deavere Smith, Steve Martin, Jessica Tandy and many more. The exhibition will remain on view through February 2026.
The exhibition invites visitors to step inside six decades of theatrical history. Visitors may try on costumes, explore an immersive set recreation, flip through original scripts, and experience an interactive rehearsal space alongside a gallery spotlighting the next generation of Long Wharf Theatre artists.
Dozens of original production photos and archival treasures take center stage in the rotunda, offering a “deep dive” into the context, relevance, and enduring resonance of seminal productions—from 1965 to today.

Show Description:
The 1999 album, Live in Vain by Mercy Velvet, exists on zero streaming platforms, and few people have heard it. But its legacy is as relevant as ever. The Mercy Velvet Project is a rock opera, a re-creation of the album. The work explores what makes us human, our collective need for community to survive—with musicians and dancers moving as one. Through nine songs, a queer and femme cast explore different barriers to experiencing love. Learning that by giving and receiving the gift of mercy, we are able to find the bridge to survival, wholeness, and hope.Over twenty years after the albums’ release, kamrDANCE and their collaborators expand upon Mercy Velvet’s legacy through their personal identities and today’s political realities. The show tells the story of the album through tap dance as percussion, contemporary dance, original text, and instrumentation via bass, guitar, vocals, and electronics—highlighting our vulnerabilities, learning together how to find the antidote that is mercy, and in turn lead meaningful lives.
Live in Vain by Mercy Velvet is the music that Choreographer Alexis Robbins grew up with, the percussive rhythms and lyrics that inspired living room dances. Her father, Mark Robbins, was the drummer and co-composer for Mercy Velvet, alongside lyricist Deb Lili, and guitarist Lou Lili. Her fathers’ love and direction has deeply influenced the music Alexis listens to and the music she creates as a tap dancer. Now, Alexis, Musical Director Christie Echols, and their collaborators bring Live in Vain to audiences for the first time.

NEW HAVEN, CT. - Come, share in the “JOY: Dances For Midwinter,” presented by the Sokolow Theatre/Dance Ensemble! This annual production is not your typical holiday dance show. Featuring Classical Modern dances to inspire the spirit of the season, they run the gamut from exuberant to thoughtful, poignant to joyful. The centerpiece of the concert is “Christmas Oratorio” by Charles Weidman. Originally created in 1934, today it is restaged by Weidman expert - and New Haven resident - Gail Corbin. Swirling like a stained glass window come to life, “Christmas Oratorio” tells the story of the nativity through dance and is set to J.S. Bach's glorious score.
“JOY” features three other dances: “Ballade” and “Prelude” are both choreographed by genre-bending Modern Dance pioneer Anna Sokolow. The former explores the thrill of young love while the latter is a rich solo homage to the music of Sergei Rachmaninoff. Finally, “Schubert Impromptu,” by Claudia Gitelman, reckons with loss yet resounds with hope. “JOY: Dances For Midwinter” is a touching experience for the whole family, coming to you December 6th at 3PM and 7PM at the Episcopal Church of St. Paul & St. James, New Haven, Connecticut.

Critical criminology scholars Venezia (Venice) Michalsen and Janet Garcia-Hallett will join us for a dialogue about Venice’s new release, which offers a critique of the discipline and a reimagining of its futures through an intersectional feminist lens...
More about the book:
This pathbreaking book brings to bear a sweeping body of contemporary intersectional feminist work to disrupt the entire discipline of criminology. Women have been largely absent from criminological theory, research, policy, and practice. This fresh, conversational book critiques the field's dominant theories by analyzing gendered patterns of perpetration and victimization and challenging traditional criminological perspectives on characteristics such as race and queerness. Designed as a rebuttal to conventional criminology textbooks, the book mirrors standard course content through an intersectional feminist lens, offering students a valuable opportunity to question the field's underpinnings and forge a new path to understanding the true meaning of justice.
Organized in fourteen chapters, each chapter includes accessible learning aids for students:
- A review of how traditional criminology textbooks cover the topic
- Critical perspectives on the topic
- Critical thinking breaks
Intersectional Feminist Criminology is a timely intervention and companion to the curriculum that helps to imagine a new world and ultimately lays out a clear abolitionist vision as an alternative to the American criminal legal system.
More about Venezia:
Dr. Venezia Michalsen (Venice) is a Criminologist with a career spanning applied settings, such as with the Women's Prison Association in New York City, and academia as faculty at Montclair State University for 15 years and now at Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) since 2022. Venice focuses on linking academics with social justice, such as being a part of the team that made Connecticut the first state in the U.S. to make prison phone calls free, and as co-founder of the Hamden Special Education PTA, which she is now working to mesh with SCSU's Critical Disabilities Minor. Her second book, "Intersectional Feminist Criminology: A Critical Companion to Theory and Research" was published this summer 2025 with UCPress. Venice is the Graduate Coordinator for the Sociology M.S. Program and is Co-Chair of the University-wide Graduate Council. After 20 years in NYC, Venice moved back to her hometown of Hamden in 2014, where she lives with her husband David, and their teenaged son, Bowie.
More about Janet:
Dr. Janet Garcia-Hallett is an Associate Professor of Criminal Justice in the University of New Haven. Her research is focused on social justice issues for marginalized populations – particularly, the impact of incarceration on communities of color and the obstacles women face before, during, and after incarceration. Her award-winning book, Invisible Mothers: Unseen Yet Hypervisible after Incarceration, explores how mothers of color navigate motherhood and life post-incarceration at the intersection of gender, motherhood, racial-ethnic background, and criminal record. It has received numerous recognitions, including the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS) 2024 Outstanding Book Award and the American Sociological Association (ASA) Section on Crime, Law, and Deviance 2023 Ida B. Wells-Barnett Distinguished Book Award. In collaboration with other research scholars, Dr. Garcia-Hallett has partaken in multi-year community-engaged research projects to improve prison conditions for those working and living in carceral spaces, and to promote the overall well-being of prison staff and residents.
