In these four drawing sessions children, ages 7-11, learn the Seven Lines of Design to get comfortable observing lines and patterns in their environments and then designing with them. One session will take their newfound line/pattern experiences into the world of Zentangle learning 12-15 basic “tangles” or unique patterns which they will draw on tiles. Copies of the book: Zentangle Basics is provided for reference. In the third session, children engage in a still life project. They learn to draw several objects using contour lines or the simple outline of an object. These drawings are cut-out and then arranged on paper to compose a still life. This class is inspired by the collages of Picasso, the paper-cuts of Matisse and the still life paintings of Cezanne. The final session prepares children for the October painting classes. They study Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh discussing his brushstrokes, lines and movement. They will use their previous study of lines and patterns for the crescent moon, stars, ghosts and wind adding a bonfire and pumpkins to celebrate the season. All materials included. See photos for samples of projects described.
Sharon Lee Mullen-Reynolds knew in High School that she was to be an Art teacher. That is exactly what she did; for 36 years she taught Visual Art in the city of New Haven. Her career hi-light was teaching 22 years at the Betsy Ross Arts Magnet Middle School. During her tenure there she was a published Fellow at Yale N.H.Teachers Institute for 2 years, the Department Chairperson for 8 years and creator of As Far As The Eye Can See a school-wide art exhibit.
Since her retirement in 2016, she has been attending numerous art exhibits and installations locally and in NYC, specifically Frida Kahlo’s exhibit at the Brooklyn Art Museum which led her to create Frida- inspired floral headpieces. In 2017 she started The Kindness Rock art installation at the Branford Festival.
Sharon is an artist who believes that art can heal your soul. In 2022 she sold her headpieces at the Ukrainian Roman Catholic church for the benefit of Ukraine’s War effort and donated 5 Ukrainian Strong “Petals for Peace” paintings to raise additional funds. These paintings were showcased on Channel 8 news.
In addition to her headpieces, Sharon works in mixed-media, crafts, collage, and watercolor landscape en plein air. Sharon’s artwork has been exhibited at City-Wide Open Studios, The ARTS Council, Calligraphers Guild, and is currently exhibited at Spectrum Gallery in Centerbrook, Connecticut.

The New Haven Museum (NHM) will celebrate CT Freedom Trail Month with an event for children focusing on American abolitionist and social activist Harriet Tubman on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. Following her escape from slavery in 1849, Tubman helped numerous others escape via the “Underground Railroad.” During the Civil War, she worked as an armed scout and spy for the Union army. She was later an activist for women’s suffrage.
Author and educator Yvette Cole will present an unforgettable, interactive storytelling experience based on her children’s book, “Harriet’s Dinner Party.” In this multimedia presentation, children are invited to step into the world of Harriet Tubman through a video story time that brings history to life.
Register for this free NH250 event here.
In Cole’s imaginative tale, a young girl enjoys dinner at Harriet Tubman’s home alongside iconic guests like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and Ida B. Wells. Through music, storytelling, and sensory engagement, young audiences will learn about Harriet Tubman’s humanitarian legacy and the impact of other Black historical figures in a fun, age-appropriate way.
Children will sing along, touch and smell themed props, and engage all five senses as they explore history in a way they’ll never forget. The program concludes with a themed activity and the opportunity to meet the author for a book signing and photo opportunity.
Cole became interested in this topic while searching for age-appropriate books on Black historical figures for children and realized how few options were available. The lack of accessible, engaging material for younger audiences made her realize how important it is to tell the stories in a way that children can understand and connect with. “I wanted to help fill that gap by focusing on figures like Harriet Tubman, whose legacy deserves to be shared and celebrated with every generation,” Cole says.
Cole hopes the public will gain a deeper appreciation for who Harriet Tubman was—not just as a conductor on the Underground Railroad but as a brave, selfless, and visionary leader who risked everything for the freedom of others. She explains, “I want the audience to walk away with a renewed sense of why Tubman’s story matters, especially for young people, and why it’s essential to keep her legacy alive through education, storytelling, and conversation.”

Join us in celebration of Johnisha Matthews Levi, who is coming to the space to discuss her stirring new memoir,[Number's Up: Cracking the Code of an American Family](https://possiblefuturesbooks.com/item/BYHrBGnWD-paURba10nSw)_, which recounts how public policy has directly disrupted Black institutions and communities, including her own family. Johnisha will be in conversation with Ferentz Lafargue.
More about the book:
For four decades, Johnisha Matthews Levi believed a conventional story about her birth, picturing her happy parents at the hospital together. While sorting through her late mother's belongings, however, she discovered a document indicating that her father was instead serving time in Lorton Correctional Complex. This revelation, along with rumors about an FBI investigation of her deceased parents' "private business," leads Levi to unearth the hidden history of her family. She ties this story to public policy, demonstrating how state lottery legalization and the War on Drugs disrupted the Black institutions and communities in Washington, DC.
Levi's stirring memoir centers on her brilliant but troubled father, a Black World War II radioman who, facing economic barriers after his naval service, reinvents himself as a "numbers man" for an underground gambling operation. The job enables John Matthews to provide for his loved ones and to achieve a level of success far beyond his childhood dreams in the impoverished Jim Crow South. In the process, he becomes an indirect target of law enforcement.
By examining the circumstances of her father's incarceration, Levi explores how multiple generations of the Matthews family have been haunted by the specter of violence against Black people. Number's Up offers a unique but quintessentially American story of survival through ingenuity as it asks: Is forgiveness the sole means of moving forward?
More about Johnisha:
Born and raised in Washington, DC, Johnisha Matthews Levi (she/her) brings a critical eye to her writing based on her experiences as a development professional for social impact nonprofits, a former litigation attorney, and a culinarian. She graduated from Harvard University, New York University School of Law, and Johnson & Wales University. Her writing has appeared in Yes! Media, Wildsam, the kitchn, and Northern Virginia Magazine. She currently lives in Nashville, Tennessee with her husband, Jon. Number’s Up is her first book.

Water informs religious and spiritual worldsenses the globe over; commonplace rituals from baptism to libation underwrite its prescience. The religious cultures of West and Central Africa, along with their multiple diasporas, theorize, encounter, and engage water centrally. This webinar panel brings together scholars of Africana religious cultures together to dive deeply into the water-based epistemologies of three Africana communities – in Burkina Faso, Cuba, and Haiti – probing liturgical language, ritual performance and spiritual entities for aquatic common threads. What unites this dialogue is an attention to cosmological imagination: utilizing sacred stories and performance as a constructive site for African Atlantic religious theorization. Panel participants will analyze the historical realities that have made water such a contested yet indispensable feature of Africana religious life.
