This exhibition will be on view at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music’s Miller Hall at 406 Prospect Street, New Haven from October 9 - December 5 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 12 - 4 p.m., except for Thanksgiving week, when the ISM is closed.

Lucasen Brown: Stanza presents a series of twenty intimate-scaled abstract paintings developed during Brown's time at Yale Institute of Sacred Music/Yale Divinity School (2023-2025). The exhibition also includes a selection of works on paper with corresponding poems by 2025 ISM graduate Emily Chan from a small book-length collaboration.

Each painting has an association for the artist: a life event, a place, a feeling, a person. Brown explores ways the painting process weaves memory, trauma and spiritual repair: "Wholeness, to me, is when I am just a painter in the world who allows a world of feeling into my abstract paintings—a place where everything belongs.” The paintings hold space for viewers to consider their own healing through faith, noticing, and remaining open to uncertainty.

Paint, for Brown, becomes both a surface and a subject. The artist hopes the paintings evoke corporeality, silence, interiority, and sacred everydayness. The repetition of marks on the painting surfaces is meditative and accretive.

The paintings are informed by textile, specifically Lenore Tawney's open-warp weavings; art movements including Minimalism and Pattern Painting and Decoration; and essays, namely Roland Barthes' theory of text and textile.

The exhibition traces the paintings’ transition from grid-based abstraction to a more intuitive and emotionally attuned process that pushes beyond the limitation of the grid. The artist realized his painting world, emotional and liberative, could no longer be confined to a grid.

Free and open to the public.

Exhibition curated by Lucasen Brown.

Tochi Onyebuchi , author of celebrated titles like Riot BabyGoliathHarmattan Season, and more, will bless the bookspace with a talk about his newest nonfiction release, [Racebook: A Personal History of the Internet](https://www.possiblefuturesbooks.com/item/wLubr6H3tUamkwaLq__WA)_. This memoir in essays explores Black folks’ growing relationship with the internet and its unique cultural impact, the communities it builds, the original hope for the future it might create, and the inequalities that are still perpetuated by the platform. Join us for what promises to be a profound discussion.

More about the book:

From the author of Hugo and NAACP Image Award finalist Riot Baby, an original memoir in essays that interrogates how identities are shaped and informed in online spaces and how the relationship between race and the Internet has changed in his three decades online.

When Tochi Onyebuchi realized that his acclaimed science fiction and fantasy storytelling career had been centrally preoccupied with race, it prompted him to consider his responsibilities as a Black writer in the Internet age. Excavating the Internet of the late 1990s and early 2000s, Racebook explores how the writer and public intellectual Onyebuchi is today, was formed in that crucible.

Beginning with the current moment when everything, including personal identity, is a matter of dispute, and tracing his online persona in reverse chronological order back to Web 1.0’s promises of greater equality and a bright digital future, Onyebuchi deftly examines the evolution of internet culture and the ways that culture has shifted in the ensuing decades. From the ever-changing nature of personal writing and free expression, to gaming, manga, fandom, and virtual reality—Onyebuchi examines the internet alongside works of literature both classic and new, and asks if our vision for what is possible has really broadened. And given the inequities Black people are still subject to, on and off the page, does the Internet only amplify our failures of imagination?

A new, compelling investigation of race through the lens of the modern Internet age, and a profound intellectual journey in pursuit of community online, Onyebuchi argues for a liberation of the individual behind the code, ultimately asking “Is this a race book or is it not? Is it either-or? Can it be both-and? Can I?”

More about Tochi:

Tochi Onyebuchi is the author of Goliath. His previous fiction includes Riot Baby, a finalist for the Hugo, Nebula, Locus, and NAACP Image Awards and winner of the New England Book Award for Fiction, the Ignyte Award for Best Novella, and the World Fantasy Award; the Beasts Made of Night series; and the War Girls series. His short fiction has appeared in The Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy, The Year’s Best Science Fiction, and elsewhere. His non-fiction includes the book (S)kinfolk and has appeared in The New York Times, NPR, and the Harvard Journal of African American Public Policy, among other places.

He has earned degrees from Yale University, New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, Columbia Law School, and the Paris Institute of Political Studies.

He currently resides in Connecticut.

In this 5-week painting class, children ages 7-11 years old paint a landscape inspired by Shel Silverstein’s book, The Giving Tree, create an African collage and alphabet art as they learn to use watercolor, tempura and acrylic paint. They become familiar with the work of artists Stuart Davis and Yayoi Kusama. As they study African patterns from Ghana, they learn the types of collage used in these art forms. Other fun 3-D projects are designing Kindness Rocks each with a positive saying or wish and the seasonal pumpkin with a variety of polka dot patterns in the style of Kusama. This is a fun, seasonal painting class where children learn a variety of art techniques and become comfortable with several fine art mediums. No experience necessary. All materials included.. Happy Fall!

Sharon Lee Mullen-Reynolds knew in High School that she was to be an Art teacher. That is exactly what she did; for 36 years she taught Visual Art in the city of New Haven. Her career hi-light was teaching 22 years at the Betsy Ross Arts Magnet Middle School. During her tenure there she was a published Fellow at Yale N.H.Teachers Institute for 2 years, the Department Chairperson for 8 years and creator of As Far As The Eye Can See a school-wide art exhibit.

Since her retirement in 2016, she has been attending numerous art exhibits and installations locally and in NYC, specifically Frida Kahlo’s exhibit at the Brooklyn Art Museum which led her to create Frida- inspired floral headpieces. In 2017 she started The Kindness Rock art installation at the Branford Festival.

Sharon is an artist who believes that art can heal your soul. In 2022 she sold her headpieces at the Ukrainian Roman Catholic church for the benefit of Ukraine’s War effort and donated 5 Ukrainian Strong “Petals for Peace” paintings to raise additional funds. These paintings were showcased on Channel 8 news.

In addition to her headpieces, Sharon works in mixed-media, crafts, collage, and watercolor landscape en plein air. Sharon’s artwork has been exhibited at City-Wide Open Studios, The ARTS Council, Calligraphers Guild, and is currently exhibited at Spectrum Gallery in Centerbrook, Connecticut.

John Higgs, writer and cultural historian, talks with Timothy Young, Curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts, about the contemporary relevance of William Blake’s artistic practice.

William Blake (1757–1827) is often described as one of the most compelling yet misunderstood figures in the history of British art and poetry, a genius and “an interruption in cultural history.” In his book William Blake Vs. The World, John Higgs addresses the mystery of Blake. Blake developed a distinct worldview during a turbulent time in history that witnessed the American and French Revolutions. He expressed his radical perspectives on religious belief, politics, and society through highly original illuminated books, watercolors, paintings, and poetry. This conversation situates Blake in his time and connects him to the questions of today.

The Schwarzman Center offers student-led tours of Shining Light on Truth: Black Lives at Yale & in New Haven, on selected Fridays from 11am - 12pm. These tours are free and open to the public, and no registration is required. Simply meet inside the Rotunda at the corner of College and Grove Streets!

Group tours are available upon request during our operating hours. Those with a group of ten or more people should contact us at ysc.info@yale.edu to schedule a time.

About the exhibition:

Installed at the Schwarzman Center,  “Shining Light on Truth: Black Lives at Yale & in New Haven,”  illuminates ongoing research that recovers the essential role of Black people throughout Yale and New Haven history. The exhibition puts back at the center of local storytelling people who have always been central to local history. It celebrates Black community building, resistance, and resilience on campus and in New Haven.

The show includes nearly one hundred images of Yale’s earliest Black students from the 1800s and early 1900s, many of whom had deep New Haven connections. The Schwarzman exhibition features compelling reproductions of photographs of New Haveners who were custodians of Yale. The Luke, Grimes, Creed, Park, and Bassett families, among the many people key to founding and sustaining Yale, and who are heralded in the show.

“Shining Light on Truth: Black Lives at Yale & in New Haven” showcases the proposal, made and thwarted in 1831, to build a Black college in New Haven. It also highlights the successful efforts of Black students in the 1960s to establish the Afro-American Cultural Center and Afro-American Studies at Yale.

This exhibition brings forth knowledge kept alive in archives and memory for many centuries—even when the dominant culture chose to ignore, bury, or forget. It extends the work of the Yale and Slavery Research Project and follows from the exhibition, “Shining Light on Truth: New Haven, Yale and Slavery,” at the New Haven Museum from February 16, 2024 – March 1, 2025.

The exhibition team includes David Jon Walker ’23 MFA, lead designer, and Michael Morand ’87 ’93 M.Div., lead curator, with Timeica Bethel ’11, Robert Laird Brown, Jennifer Coggins, Mohamed Diallo ’26, Regina Mason, Hope McGrath, Carlynne Robinson, and Charles Warner, Jr.

On Saturday, November 1, Kyle Bejnerowicz will shine a light on Shoreline Arts Alliance as The Diamond Baritones’ Circle of Life Tour makes a detour to Guilford.

Kyle grew up in Guilford, and in 2013 he received a vocal music scholarship from Shoreline Arts Alliance. This scholarship encouraged and empowered Kyle to pursue his passion. In 2024, he co-founded The Diamond Baritones, a Netherlands-based group that performs a mix of modern, classic and rock songs. The group appeared on Holland’s Got Talent, and thanks to the Golden Buzzer, was sent straight to the semi-final round.

Kyle believes that the support and recognition of a Shoreline Arts Alliance scholarship played a major role in his success, and he is returning with The Diamond Baritones to pay it forward. The Diamond Homecoming Concert will take place on Saturday, November 1 at 8 pm in Guilford, and all of the proceeds will benefit Shoreline Arts Alliance’s Scholarship and Leadership Development Programs.

EveryBody Dances @ Yale Schwarzman Center brings local and visiting dance artists to our Dance Studio to teach masterclasses in jazz, hip hop, salsa, modern, contemporary, precision dance and more! All community members are welcome. This week's class titled To Move and Groove features improvisation, creative movement, and contemporary dance led by  Raymond Pinto .

Class Description:

"This workshop welcomes everyone, no matter your experience, background, or physical ability. Together, we will explore movement in ways that spark creativity, curiosity, and connection. Improvisation will be at the heart of our time together, as it offers a powerful way to understand more deeply how we dance with and within our bodies. Through guided activities that help us notice how we move, games that awaken the senses, and exercises that strengthen how we relate to one another, participants will discover how personal interests and impulses can inspire new ways of moving."

"Our time together will be joyful, engaging, and open to all who wish to explore movement as a shared and welcoming experience. We will work both individually and in groups, observing and learning from one another as ideas take shape in the moment. There is always space for questions as we move towards expanding the idea of perfection. Our focus will be on being fully present in movement and experiencing the magnificence of one’s own synergy. Through play, rhythm, and open-ended exploration, we will celebrate the richness of moving together and discovering what emerges." - Raymond Pinto

In this hands-on quilting workshop, participants will explore the bold, playful, and unconventional world of modern quilt blocks. You’ll learn how to break away from traditional symmetry and embrace negative space, color contrast, and improvisation to create eye-catching designs. This two-part class includes a follow-up Guided Making session where participants can continue their block projects or bring in another quilt to work on alongside the instructor and fellow makers.

This is a two-part class: November 2nd (instruction) and November 16th (guided making).

What to Expect

In the first session, students will dive into key principles of modern quilt design and practice constructing blocks using techniques like asymmetry, minimalism, and bold color placement. You’ll work hands-on with a sewing machine and learn how to design blocks that pop, using both guided patterns and improvisational methods.

The second session (November 16th) is a Guided Making day—participants can return to build on what they started in the first class or bring in a different quilting project to continue with support from the instructor and their fellow participants.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own fabric for the style and color palette they want to work in. A small selection of fabric will be available for practice and experimentation if needed.

Skills You’ll Acquire

• Design principles for modern quilting (negative space, asymmetry, bold color use)

• Techniques for piecing modern quilt blocks

• How to work with improvisational layouts

• Hands-on sewing machine use for creative piecing

• Pattern adaptation and block customization

What’s Provided

• Sewing machines and necessary tools

• Rotary cutters, rulers, and cutting mats

• Limited fabric scraps for practice

• Guidance and support across both sessions

Participants are highly encouraged to bring their own fabric to reflect their personal style and to get the most out of the creative process.

Who Should Attend

This class is great for beginner to intermediate quilters who are looking to experiment with design and color or step outside traditional quilting methods. Whether you’re a returning student or just curious about quilting with a modern twist, this class offers a creative, low-pressure space to explore.

Prerequisites/Safety Information

No specific prerequisites. Basic familiarity with a sewing machine is helpful. Participants should bring fabric of their choice for their main project. Tools and safety instructions will be provided. Scrap materials will be available for testing and practice.

This is a two-part class: November 2nd (instruction) and November 16th (guided making).

Fix it, don't toss it! Join our Community Repair Fair @ MakeHaven w/ Yale Engineering volunteers. Learn hands-on repair skills & fix items together. Free event - pre-register for your 30-min slot!

Got something broken? Don't toss it, let's fix it together!

MakeHaven is excited to host our  Community Repair Fair , a hands-on event focused on empowering you to repair your beloved items!

We're thrilled to partner with the  Yale Engineering , whose talented student volunteers will be on hand to share their skills and guide you through the repair process.

How It Works: The "Fix-It Clinic" Model

This isn't a drop-off service! Think of this as a collaborative learning workshop. You bring an item, and together with our volunteer coaches, you'll diagnose the problem and work towards a fix.

  • You participate:  Be prepared to work on your item with guidance.
  • Volunteers guide:  Our skilled volunteers are here to advise and assist, sharing their knowledge. They are enthusiastic helpers, not certified professionals.
  • Learn new skills:  The goal is education and empowerment, reducing waste one repair at a time!
  • Take it home:  All items must leave with their owners at the end of their slot; we cannot store items.

Registration Required - Book Your 30-Minute Slot!

To ensure everyone gets dedicated attention,  advance registration is required  for a specific 30-minute time slot between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM. Please use the links below to reserve your spot. Space is limited!

(Note: If you click a link and the slot is full, please return here and select another time.)

Cost:  The event itself is  free  to attend! However, participants will be asked to cover the  cost of any significant supplies  used during their repair (e.g., replacement cords, plugs, solder, fabric, fasteners, etc.). Payment for supplies can be made on-site, cash or credit.

What Can We Help You Fix? (And What Should Stay Home?)

Our volunteers have diverse skills, but for this pilot event, we're focusing on items that can be reasonably diagnosed and repaired within the time slot. Please bring items you can comfortably carry and work on.

YES - Please Bring:

  • Lamps & Small Appliances:  Items with broken cords (lamps, fans), toasters, coffee makers, clocks, blenders (with simple mechanical/electrical issues).
  • Textiles:  Clothing/fabric items needing simple repairs like patching holes, sewing seams, replacing buttons or zippers.
  • Furniture & Wooden Items:  Small items like chairs, tables, picture frames needing minor repairs (e.g., gluing, simple fasteners).
  • Jewelry & Accessories:  Items needing restringing or clasp repair.
  • Items with Simple Mechanisms:  Things with straightforward buttons, wires, or handles that are broken.

NO - Please Leave at Home:

  • Complex Electronics:  Smartphones, tablets, computers, laptops, TVs, modern game consoles.
  • Microwaves:  Due to safety complexities.
  • Anything with Gasoline Engines:  Lawn mowers, etc.
  • Vehicles or Vehicle Parts.
  • Bicycles:  We recommend our friends at the Bradley Street Bicycle Co-op for bike repairs!
  • Items needing welding  (for this pilot event).
  • Anything leaking fluids or inherently unsafe.
  •

Important Disclaimers - Please Read:

  • All repairs are attempted at the owner's risk.
  • Our volunteers are advisors offering guidance; they are  not certified professionals, and MakeHaven provides  no warranty  or guarantee  on repairs.
  • The repair process itself might sometimes cause  further damage  to an item.
  • MakeHaven and its volunteers accept  no liability  for the outcome of any repair attempt or the future safety/functionality of the item.
  • You will be asked to agree to liability waivers during registration (see below).

Let's work together to learn, repair, and keep useful items out of the landfill!

Doors at 5:30, music to start at 6:00.

Mythology evokes images of gods, titans, demons, and beasts of every kind. Yet, it’s the spark of humanity that keeps us telling and retelling myths. It’s these stories of seduction, inheritance, and hubris that Nashville-based folk duo Haunted Like Human rekindle in the 14 songs on their third album American Mythology. Since the release of 2021’s Tall Tales & Fables, Dale Chapman and Cody Clark have been refining their sound rather than departing from it. With a background in poetry and prose, Dale Chapman's granular focus on language is simpatico with Cody Clark’s background in classical guitar, where each note carries its own weight. The result is a shapely set of songs that borrow from universal lore in order to reveal intimate truths. The pair prove they write songs like novelists write their books, using careful detail and well-shaped characters to tell even the heaviest of stories. Whatever the topic, the songs shine with restrained arrangements and entwined harmonies. This duo tells stories so well that there’s no need to cloak them with heavy-handed production or vocal processing. Instead, Haunted Like Human lets the humanity shine through.

All are welcome to join us for an opening reception for this art exhibit on Wednesday, October 8 at 5 p.m.

The Schwarzman Center offers student-led tours of Shining Light on Truth: Black Lives at Yale & in New Haven, on selected Tuesdays from 5:30pm - 6:30pm.

The Yale Jazz Ensembles Big Band, Wayne Escoffery, Music Director, will celebrate the centennial of the birth of American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, and composer Miles Davis during the 2025-26 academic year. Tonight’s concert will feature world premieres of big band arrangements for the Yale Jazz Ensembles Big Band by Michael Mossman , including BoplicityBudo, and Deception, from Davis’ pioneering album “Birth of the Cool.”

“Birth of the Cool” is a compilation album of eleven tracks recorded by Davis’ nonet for the label over the course of three sessions during 1949 and 1950. Featuring unusual instrumentation and several notable musicians, the music consists of innovative arrangements influenced by Afro-American music and classical music techniques and marked a major development in post-bebop jazz. As the title suggests, these recordings are considered seminal in the history of “cool jazz.”

Cathy Lovell’s lifelong interest in the creative arts continues to guide her through a gratifying career as both art educator and studio artist. A graduate of the University of New Hampshire and Wesleyan University, Cathy has taught in the Newton, MA, Greenwich, CT and East Lyme, CT public school systems. She has also taught private classes in various fields including stained glass, jewelry making and silver work, enameling, ceramics, glass bead making, and quilting.

In the interest of furthering her own education, Cathy received a scholarship to attend the Pilchuck Glass School where she worked with Dale Chihuly and Patrick Reyntiens. Her interest in felting began with a workshop led by Lynne Ocone at the Guilford Art Center. Cathy is a member of the Northeast Felt makers Guild where she has had the privilege of participating in classes given by world renowned felt makers. Cathy credits her friend and fellow felt maker Catherine Stebinger with sharing ongoing creative energy, inspiration, and encouragement. In Mojave poet Natalie Diaz’s words, “The Colorado River is the most endangered river in the United States—also, it is a part of my body. / I carry a river. It is who I am: ‘Aha Makav. This is not metaphor.” This symposium is provoked by Diaz’s poem, “The First Water is the Body,” and convenes scholars, activists, artists, and spiritual practitioners diversely committed to the vitality of water and waterspaces. Amidst water crisis, we seek to share cosmovisions, bodies of knowledge, modes of communication that emerge from deep attention to water. In our interlocking articulations of water cosmologies, water crisis, and water power, we aim to open new paths of insight and collaboration toward collective healing.
